Who The FunK?

~BIO

Otherwise known as "The FunKtional Adix", Andre Gavino (affectionately dubbed "FunK") can boast of a proud lineage: Filipino and Irish, but his presence is fully in the here and now.
   FunK is a powerful stage performer who has been coming up in the industry for nearly a decade, crafting his brand of musical spoken word even as he did double-duty as cameraman and film producer for projects such as his weekly Cable Access show “The FunKtional Adix Showcase.” The man likes to push: himself, his limits, and the boundaries of spoken word. He blends technology with the art of poetry to present a riveting multimedia experience few in the spoken word arena have achieved.

    As an educator FunK has worked w/ people of all ages helping them find their own voice and the confidence to present it. Selected as the Artist in Residence for The Osborne Middle School District in 2005, he used his technical skills in Video Production to encourage and expose young minds to the world of performance poetry. Also, in 2005 was his performance-oriented workshop for the University of Arizona, where he worked w/ the University’s Poetry Center to once again blend his technical and artistic skills to educate and encourage other artists.
   FunK is self-produced, with intensity, a focus, a drive, and a bag of talents not often seen in the entertainment industry. Whether from the poet's lens or the camera lens, FunK takes a bold perspective that exposes the inner world of the artist and the outer world of the audience without flinching.

~The Artist

From words on the page to images across the screen FunK has trekked back and forth across the spectrum. Called by some the last true Renaissance Man. FunK is just at ease in the spotlight in as a performer or M.C./Host. He is one of the most entertaining and versatile performers you will ever come across. whether on stage, in front or behind the camera he is a ball of energy described as a Super Nova and a calming light all mixed together in one FUNKY Poet.

~The Promoter

FunK does not only Feature as a solo artist but works tirelessly promoting other artists as an organizer and/or Director. In addition to the Live performance shows there is "The FunKtional Adix Showcase," filmed directed and produced by no other than FunK. "Showcase" features Artist from around the nation with Highlights on AZ. Artists. As the current Director of the "Lamplight Reading Series" he demonstrates his love for the LIVE art of spoken word, and is leading the 39 year old reading series into it's golden age! Working with David Mitchell of Growing Poetry Productions as CO-Director, FunK will usher "The Tucson Poetry Crawl" into it's 10th year.
